Delay & Pressure

Key Moments to Use Delay

The defensive principle of Delay is an essential tactic in soccer, as it aims to slow down the opposition’s attacking play, giving defenders time to reorganize and limit the attacking team’s goal-scoring opportunities. Here are some key moments when a team should use Delay:

Delay should be employed immediately after losing possession, allowing the defending team to quickly regain their defensive shape. By slowing down the attacking team’s progress, defenders can buy time to reposition themselves, making it harder for the opposition to penetrate the defence.

Delay is particularly effective in slowing down quick counter-attacks by the opposition. When a team is in a vulnerable defensive position, defenders should use delay tactics to slow down the opposition’s play, allowing teammates to recover and regroup defensively.

When defending against a fast-moving attack, a defender can use delay tactics to buy time for teammates to provide defensive support. This can be done by slowing down the opposition’s progress and forcing them to make lateral or backward passes, allowing time for teammates to track back and support the defence.

Using Delay can put pressure on the opposition to make errors and give away possession. By delaying and pressuring attackers, defenders can force mistakes, such as a misplaced pass or a rushed shot, giving the defending team a chance to regain possession.

Delay can be used to waste time when the defending team is protecting a lead. By slowing down play and frustrating the opposition, the defending team can run down the clock and secure the win.
